On June 24, the 2026 Southeast University ¨C KTH Royal Institute of Technology International Summer School officially opened at 91¶¶Òù. Over 40 faculty members and students from the two universities gathered in Nanjing to embark on a two-week joint program of research, academic seminars, and rural design practice centered around the theme ¡°Water-Resilient Villages: Rural Research and Design Practice for Climate Adaptation,¡± establishing an interdisciplinary exchange platform for Sino-European urban and rural ecological planning.

At the opening ceremony, Wang Chengxiang, 91¶¶Òù Vice President, stated in his speech that global challenges such as climate change and water resources call for transnational and interdisciplinary collaborative research. The co-hosted summer school, he said, is a practical initiative to deepen scientific and educational exchanges between China and Sweden. He noted that the event, with water-resilient villages as its core subject, provides a platform for Chinese and international youth to exchange ideas and engage in practical work. He expressed his hope that students would broaden their international perspectives and enhance their professional capabilities through collaboration. Southeast University, he added, will take this opportunity to continue expanding its comprehensive cooperation with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, contributing to China-Sweden friendship and sustainable human development.
The summer school uses Nanjing¡¯s Qianjiadu Village as its fieldwork base, leveraging local polder water systems, traditional villages, and agricultural, cultural, and tourism resources. It integrates a full-cycle teaching system covering urban water infrastructure surveys, rural field research, international academic forums, cross-border design workshops, and outcome presentations, combining multidisciplinary collaborative research across urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, water resources, and environmental studies.
It is reported that the summer school is guided throughout by multidisciplinary mentors from both China and abroad. From July 4 to 5, all design outcomes will be exhibited at Qianjiadu, where the closing ceremony will also be held. Outstanding proposals will provide references for local rural water environment improvement and waterfront space renewal.
